Over the last 70 years there has been a number of Australian owned vessels operating in Australian and international waters that have carried the name ‘Kanimbla’. The vessel that this business takes its name from is the ‘Kanimbla’ (inset), which was a passenger vessel converted to a merchant cruiser that served during World War II.The vessel was used in part to return ex-service personnel from South East Asia at the conclusion of the war, and also serviced Fremantle via the East Coast of Australia. Peter Nicoll’s father returned from the war on this ship and the Kanimbla became symbolic to the family, hence the reason for the business name. |
The word Kanimbla in literal terms is an Aboriginal word that means ‘fishing ground’. As a matter of interest there is also a township in Northern Queensland known as Kanimbla.
